Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Thursday he would not try to bring the massive budget to a vote in the face of Republican opposition to the inclusion of 7,000 specially funded projects costing billions of dollars.
The federal government is currently running under a continuing resolution, as lawmakers did not pass a budget late this year and instead approved the temporary spending measure. The government's fiscal year began on October 1.
Democratic leaders in the Senate abandoned efforts Thursday to pass a massive $1.2 trillion spending bill that would have funded the U.S. government through September 30, 2011.
Reid says he and McConnell will collaborate on a bill to fund the federal government through early next year,christian louboutin, by which time Republicans will have a majority in the House of Representatives and six more seats in the Senate, giving them a stronger hand in the appropriations process.
U.S. lawmakers are seeking to pass a stopgap spending measure to fund the federal government,moncler, as current financing runs out at midnight Saturday.
The White House on Friday said administration officials are working with both Democrats and Republicans to see what options are available.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell convinced enough Republicans who were considering voting for the bill to switch positions. Some Republicans had even threatened to read the entire 1,934 page bill on the floor of the Senate as a delaying tactic.

Presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs says a year-long spending bill is preferred over a three-month temporary spending bill. Gibbs says President Barack Obama could sign something as late as Sunday to continue funding the operations of the government.
The projects,piumini moncler, commonly known as earmarks, are requested by individual lawmakers for their home states and districts.
