FASHION accessories made from sugar are sure to be the highlight of London's Form art and design fair, due to begin tomorrow. "I see these pieces as walking sculptures, making a bridge between wearer, maker and the consumer who can literally make a piece of art part of themselves" says designer Ana Crisan, whose elaborate and delicate pieces - which only last for a few weeks before decomposing - will be on display at Olympia until March 4. Crisan is happy for customers to eat the designs too, saying, "art is there to be consumed, so please start nibbling at it as soon as it comes into the open,
asics mexico!" Originally a painter and sculptor from Philadelphia, Crisan had the obscure idea to make fashion out of food as a child, when she used to help her parents in the family bakery. "My mother is a baker and as I was growing up I used to work with her, mainly decorating cakes. It is a beautiful craft and I always felt it could be used in a different way. One day I suddenly had the idea of changing the landscape these sugar sculptures existed on, transferring them from the round surface of the cake to the body. I am now actually in the process of opening a bakery in Albany, New York, where my work will be open to the public on a daily basis". Crisan joins the creative likes of Tom Dixon and Paul Smith, who will all be showcasing designs from the worlds of interior, fine art, vintage and modern fashion at Form.
