"How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?"
If you don't believe that a church is a business, just call the office of the Secretary of State in the State in which you reside.
A church is a 501(c)(3) just like any other charitable organization. This exempt status is issued by the I.R.S. which also permit's a special tax exemption for the housing of a Pastor. If it is an organization in which the government regulates, it is a business.
To be successful, a church must operate like a business. Successful management requires wise planning, organizing,Cheap Jordan 4, directing, and controlling. It requires policies and procedures to which all members must adhere.
A church is often more difficult to manage than a (for) profit entity. One reason is obvious. If you are not paying a group of people,Air Jordan Shoes, you find it more difficult to make demands that generate positive results. Another equally important reason, primarily in the case of Baptist churches, is the Pastor. The Board of Officers is the key body that hires the Pastor, but, then the employee starts telling the employer what to do. Can you think of any other type organization where the employee completely controls the employer?
There are some Deacon and Trustee Boards that are strong enough to balance this relationship. Not many, but, some. Most Baptist churches are operated like proprietorships with the Pastor as the sole owner. Like too many sole owners,Cheap Air Jordan Spizikes, most Pastors will not accept the fact that his/her training is in the gospel not in business management. 99% of Pastors have never spend one month of their lives operating a business were their sole decisions determine if the rent at home would be paid or if there would be food on the table.
An electrician, who was a foreman with a major electrical contractor,Jordan 2011, once called me and said that he wanted to start his own business. He was an excellent electrician,Cheap Jordan 1, but, had never before managed a business. In fact, he didn't even know how to start one. In the early years of our relationship, he was a good listener. But, that would change as years went by. The business grew from one employee to one hundred and from his basement to a 1.8 million dollar complex. He lost his building and control of his business for one primary reason. He never accepted the fact that he was a professional electrician not a professional business manager.
"To know that you know what you know and that you don't know what you don't know, that is true knowledge". Most churches prosper financially because of high levels of income,Nike Jordan 1, not wise business management. When income (donations) is good, it makes church managers look like pros. It's like a basketball team that can't miss a shot. They could shoot with their eyes close and the ball would go in. Then suddenly something happens. Someone put a lid on the basket and all the defensive errors and poor coaching start to show.
The pews are full and people are sitting in the balcony. Then things change. Members get older. New members are few. Income decreases while expenses continue to increase. The Pastor's "Degree" is not in marketing or management or managerial accounting or financial investments. The Board of Officers are good Christians. Some have professional backgrounds in area that could help with positive solutions. The problem is when there is a meeting, everyone spends equal time talking, both, those with professional business knowledge and those with none. Therefore, nothing gets done.
Now, if the Powers To Be, both Pastor, Deacons and Trustees, were professionally trained, they might have seen the storm coming before it caused damage.
What Now? How does the church overcome? First,Air Jordan 4, there must be a Business Plan addressing three primary areas
A) Internal Financial Conservation
B) Creative fundraising. Just passing the collection plate is not
enough
C) Increasing membership. The maximum solution
It would be wise to seek professional guidance in these areas. Most churches will not. Most people do not think that they can perform a medical operation without professional training. But, they think that they can make wise financial decisions without professional training.
Of course, you want to do as must as you can for yourself to save money. This is fine, just as long as you can appreciate went enough is enough. Over the counter medicine is fine,Air Jordan Retro 5 Fundraising Through Websites -, just don't try to operate on yourself.
Having the skills to combine the two,Jordan Space Jams, self application with professionalism is an art. So let's get started. Let's find out if you are a good artist.
Enclosed is some material that might help point you in the right direction.
God's speed!
