Default Windows 7 Pro Getting the Best Of Accounting Gradu

Here’s a story we just received from someone who found that her college degree was little more than something to include at the bottom of the countless numbers of resumes she sent out to companies who WEREN’T hiring…but, thanks to some volunteer work and a chance encounter with the “right person at the right time” her career took a serious turn for the better. Here’s Allison, a CPA…
I still remember how proud my mom and dad were, the day I got my graduate degree…the look in their eyes as I held up my accounting degree…they were positively beaming!
“Go to school, get a degree, and get a good accounting graduate job!” My dad would always say. He wanted nothing but the best for me and so I took his advice…
So there I sat, looking through the want ads, day after day. You see, going to college, getting a degree, and getting a good job sounds great…only when the economy sucks, it is much easier said than done. I must have looked through 100 pages of online job sites and made 50 or so phone calls looking for accounting graduate jobs and all the companies pretty much said the same thing. “ We are not hiring now, but if you send us your resume, we can keep it on file for you…” Well, I HAVE a filing cabinet…what I need is a freakin JOB!
The monotony of the search got to me and suddenly, without warning, I volunteered to help my local Chamber of Commerce. I know, there is no $ in the word volunteer, but I had to do SOMETHING. It turns out, my Chamber of Commerce was looking for a volunteer to head up the legislative committee. Ok, so I know NOTHING about legislative affairs, but heck, they weren’t paying me, so how could they fire me? I decided to give it a go.
The first two weeks weren’t bad. I read the local blogs about the upcoming county budget meetings, learned a thing or two about referendums,Windows 7 Pro, all the while still pushing out resumes like I was in a race to use up all the existing paper in the world. The next morning I was supposed to attend the first committee meeting. Again, I figured since they weren’t paying me, there wasn’t much to be concerned about…….
The next morning, I walked into the boardroom…I was a few minutes late but I assumed many others would be straggling in behind me…that was NOT the case. Before me sat 27 of the staunchest and most disapproving faces I had yet seen in my life. Every man was dressed in a fine suit and tie and the women looked the cover models for CEO magazine’s best dressed. I only recognized two faces, but that was because of their billboards all over town. These were THE players in my area, and I was supposed to lead THEM in that day’s meeting. The sweat began to pour and the heart began to pound. I sat down, excused my tardiness and looked down at the agenda, as my red face must surely have beamed. Before I could call the meeting to order, one of the men quickly shout out a question to me about the proposed bill restricting new building heights to be voted on in the coming weeks. He wanted to know the Chamber’s firm position. What I SHOULD have said was…”I don’t know.” What I DID say was a collection and collaboration of words such as HERETOFORE and JUXTAPOSITION and who knows what else! I was nervous and just started rambling! The laughter in the room was not subtle, in fact, I am pretty sure I saw the President of a local bank spew coffee from his nose…I thought to myself “I actually VOLUNTEERED for this???” Thankfully, another member of the committee came to my rescue and stated the position while I nervously fidgeted in my chair.
As everyone made their way out of the room, there were a lot of comments like “Don’t worry, it is always tough at first” and “Don’t let them intimidate you” Yeah, like I am sticking around for THIS gig. It was the next to last person who changed my day…well, my life really. A nice older gentleman in a 3 piece suit pulled me aside and said, “Honey, this may not be your bag.  What do you REALLY want to do? It can’t be in legislative affairs” he said with a chuckle. “Well” I replied “I got my degree in accounting quite a few months back but every company listed on the job sites was only resume collecting….none were hiring, so I volunteered here as a diversion.” With that, he handed me his card and said “Well, I don’t post on those job sites…I deal direct, one on one. Call me early next week.” As he left, I looked down…and to my amazement, I was looking at the name of the owner of one of the biggest accounting firms in the county. I couldn’t believe it! Maybe this hell torture of a meeting was worth it after all…
That was about 6 months ago…I have been working as a staff accountant for that firm ever since at a salary that allowed me to ditch my $1000 beater and step into some brand new wheels. To think, I NEVER would have met the man who gave me my dream job if I had just kept doing the same thing…by branching out, meeting new people, I stepped right into a gold mine opportunity. Scenarios like these may not happen every day, but they will NEVER happen if you don’t tackle your problem from all angles. Being a volunteer for a committee I knew NOTHING about instead of mindlessly sending out resumes for accounting graduate jobs turned out to be exactly the right thing to do…
