The palace is open for tours, there is a charge but I don't remember how much it was, it was included in our tour price. You will have to remove your shoes and put on slippers while inside the royal residence. It is the beautifully restored palace of Dom Pedro II and houses the imperial crown holding 639 diamonds and 77 pearls Levis Belt, and beautiful china pieces.
Must sees here in Petropolis are the Casa do Barao Rio Branco and the Casa do Barao de Maua. Also don't miss the Crystal Palace (Palacio Crista). It was imported from France in 1879 and today is used for special events. You can't miss it, it is right in the middle of the center of town in the middle of a small park. It is used today for special events. We were there Easter week 2008 and the town was decorating it for Easter.
Petropolis is home to several beautiful mansions such as the Palacio da Princess Isabel and the home of Brazil's "father of aviation" and inventor of the wristwatch Casa de Santos Dumont.
We arrived in Rio de Janeiro to board the Azamara Journey cruise ship for a 7 day cruise. While we were waiting for our cruise to depart we decided to take a tour to Petropolis. We had heard it was a lovely town where the King and his family spent their summer months in order to escape from the heat and humidity and crowds of tourists.

There are many fine restaurants in Petropolis. We stopped and had the authentic Churrascaria (Brazilian barbecue). Churrascaria consists of a salad/dessert bar and the wait staff walks around each table offering several different cuts of meat (beef, pork, sausages) and poultry (chicken). If there is a vegan within your group the staff will make sure they have enough to eat as well.
You may opt to take a walking tour that last for about 3 hours including enough time for shipping and other attractions. Tours usually start at the Cathedral Sao Pedro de Alcantara where you will find the tombs of the late emperor Dom Pedro II and his wife Dona Teresa and their daughter Princess Isabel.
Our time in Petropolis was not nearly long enough, we could have easily spent an additional day here shopping and eating our way through the small village. It reminded me of a town out of one of the fairytales by Hans Christian Anderson.

If you stay in Rio and want to get off the beaten path and away from the crowds, this is a great place to visit. Petropolis is located 60 miles north of Rio. Petropolis (the town of Pedro (the king)) is quite a hidden jewel. For anyone wanting to get away from the heat and humidity of the summer months by the beach this is the place to go. You take a motor coach up a narrow windy cement road that travels in one direction only and the scenery is beautiful. You will stop a few times to use the local restrooms (take wipes with you) be aware this is a foreign country and cleanliness is not the same as it is here in the United States. These facilities are located inside little road side stores where you can purchase soft drinks and snacks and souvenirs.
Petropolis was the summer retreat for the imperial court during the 1800's. It is still the home of the heir to the throne Com Pedro de Orleans e Branganca. You can wander around the small town or ride a horse drawn carriage through the parks and over the bridges and canals. The streets still have lamps from the 18th century and Petropolis is a beautiful little village that is very easy to wander around in.
