MAPLETON
pink prom dresses, Iowa – The rite of passage that is prom can occupy the mind of a teenager for weeks.
Lorissa Mauch had bigger things to think about last Saturday night.
Her father, Jason Mauch, called from their home in Mapleton mere minutes after a tornado tore through their neighborhood, twisting the structure as Mauch crouched in the cellar.
“I always wanted to see a tornado,” Jason said. “It was a big wall and once I figured out it was coming directly at us I jumped. It showed its big face at me.”
And, like everyone here

That big face contained winds of up to 165 miles per hour. It destroyed an estimated 142 homes and businesses in Mapleton.
It wrecked three Mauch vehicles and wrapped 10 tons of metal from two nearby businesses around his light blue four-bedroom home.
Jason cut his thumb climbing out of the basement cellar. He called his daughter from his cell phone and told her he survived.
Everything else? Not so much.
“When Dad called, he sounded scared,” said Lorissa

The upcoming Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto prom wasn’t on Lorissa’s mind until the high school junior finally saw her home the following afternoon. A week ago today. She had purchased a short
Bridesmaid dresses, black-and-silver layered dress in Sioux City for $80. Hadn’t worn it yet.
After the storm, a group of volunteers pried the steel away from the home. Jason likened the pressure to a firm grip.
“It was just like someone had a hand over our home and protected it,” he said. “When that steel came off, it was like the pressure was relieved.”
Students cut up the steel and hauled it away. The money they’re getting for it will help MVAO senior Colby Mauch buy a car to replace the one he lost in the storm. Colby is Lorissa’s older brother.
Thirty friends spent 30 minutes bagging clothing and possessions. Lorissa found her prom dress hanging in the closet.
“From all the stuff that was on top of the house, I didn’t think we’d save anything,” she said. “I didn’t even have to take it to get it cleaned.”
Another tiny miracle in a week full of them for Mapleton
Formal dresses, a town that continues to free itself from a twister’s grip.
Juniors and seniors dressed, dined and danced Saturday in a rock-n-roll themed 2011 prom. For many students, Lorissa Mauch included, Saturday marked their first break in a week of cleaning debris and salvaging possessions. Starting over.
There was some chatter early in the week that prom would be postponed. School officials weren’t sure they’d even have school as the tornado peeled away the roof in two areas. Structural engineers inspected the site Monday, gave it the all-clear for school Tuesday.
A decision to hold prom as scheduled followed. A group of senior girls protested Wednesday that they didn’t think the juniors should decorate the gym, per tradition. That time should be spent working in yards and streets.
“Oh
long prom dresses, the kids need this,” said Steve Oberg

Oberg said the school received calls from dozens of people who wished to donate

“Lorissa could have had her pick of 100 dresses,” Oberg said.
Luckily, she didn’t need another. She grabbed the dress from her closet and took it to Grandma Kaye Mauch’s home in nearby Castana, where the family is staying for now.
Lorissa also didn’t need a free hair appointment. Her mother, Julie Becker, left the snow and ice of Albion, Neb., early Saturday morning for Castana. She would handle that task.
Was she nervous about getting it just right for the prom? “Not really,” Becker said with a laugh. “That’s the thing when you don’t have a real picky daughter.”
It’s also her profession. Becker owns a salon.
So, she applied curls, spray and more spray in the living room as a dozen family members gathered. Josh Mauch, an uncle, lightened an already festive mood when he began brushing Colby’s thick brown hair

Sunshine, bright smiles and the sound of laughter pushed a cold front aside Saturday afternoon as the teens assembled for photos beneath blue skies. The tuxes looked sharp. The dresses dazzled.
And the hair?
