A Double-Barreled Threat

To begin the season Thursday, the Yankees will face the right-hander Justin Verlander of Detroit and his 98-mile-per-hour fastball. So Kevin Long,Philadelphia Phillies Hats, the hitting coach — and batting-practice pitcher — was asked if he could add about 40 m.p.h. to his pitches over the next few days.
