Injured Bird Reds’ hero
Dave Le Roux tussles with a Guernsey player
IT might have spend him a broken wrist, but Andrew Bird’s superb save in the final minutes of Jersey and Guernsey’s Island Games semi-final showdown helped send our first XI team into tonight’s grand final.
Jersey have been absolutely magnificent in this tournament, and a gold honor would be a fitting end to an admirable campaign.
Yesterday they held off Guernsey 2-0 apt preserve an undefeated scamper of 4 matches, and still with fair one goal conceded.
Of course, nobody fires up a Channel Islands footballer like the prospect of a Jersey vs Guernsey conflict, and Jersey proved their enthusiasm from the off – slick passing, good game awareness and the ambition to win every ball led to some chaste chances in the opening half, with Craig Culkin’s charges showing far more power than their competitors.
In the first 15 min of an hour Russell Le Feuvre was denied a headed goal from a agreeable Ben Gallichan corner kick; Mark Lucas smashed a chance from 35 yards, and a good cross fell to Ross Crick above the edge of the carton but the custodian came to him, and scuppered his attempt to coil it into the net.
Though Guernsey had the mysterious moment, Jersey were stronger and tighter, playing faster, more fiery football that, every once in a while, entirely flummoxed Guernsey’s defence.
It certainly wasn’t the contest the spectators had expected – rarely is one side so dominant in an inter-insular match – but when Crick opened the scoring, with a header on 37 minutes, the first half was near enough won.
It was in the second half, whatever, that the Sarnians started to cause problems, and towards the end of the mate, too, when Jersey had seemed elated ample to perch as a 1-0.
All of a sudden, as the game ran into its final 20 minutes, Jersey keeper Bird base he had some solemn go to do – Guernsey won a free kick from a precarious location, though the pellet flew over the crossbar, and 3 successive corner kicks intimidated to disassemble Jersey’s defence who, beneath the pressure, performed outstandingly.
But at 88 minutes and another flurry of Guernsey corner kicks, free hits and well-targeted attempts at goal, a Sarnian equaliser saw unavoidable – until, with just one minute of normal time remaining, Bird dived to make the save namely certainly stopped all chance of more period.
The game was halted meantime Bird received treatment on his wrist, waiting to be taken to hospital, but as long as the clock re-started Jersey were now sharp to mantle it up, fending off any earlier wishes of a Guernsey resumption with a cracking Mark Lucas goal, rolled neatly quondam the – keeper, just before of the final signal.
Coach Craig Culkin, puma shoes ferrari, was, understandably, joyed with his players. He said: ‘On thfirst and foremost half extravaganza you’d muse there was only one team in the game, fivefingers shoes, but that arrange of fell to us to take a few more chances really, and get the second goal early on.
‘Over the way of the game, whereas, we defended excellently, and Andrew Bird actually kept us in it there. Our intention in Aland was to go and win every game, and surely immediately we have the belief that we tin conquer this tournament. Our faith is increasing, our confidence namely increasing, and our team namely playing truly, nike high dunks, actually well together. Andrew Bird was absolutely imaginary, Chris Andrews has been majestic, so has Ross Crick, yet you can’t mention one athlete because everybody has played so well. We’re definitely looking amenable to the ultimate now – it’s going to be a excellent atmosphere.’
Jersey face home side Aland in the final tonight at the Wiklof Athletics Stadium. Kick off is 7.30 pm Jersey time.
End of the road for women footballers
JERSEY’S woman’s footballers bowled out of the championship yesterday emulating a 4-1 defeat by competition favourites Aland at Markusb?le, Finstr?m.
Overall their outcome this week were many cultivated on Rhodes. They achieved third in their group after scoring a dozen goals and recording victories against Greenland and Saaremaa.
Jersey Football Association president Ricky Weir said: ‘It’s a heavy correction on Rhodes and the congratulations to the management and the players for their efforts.
‘They cornered in a very gallant performance yesterday and after going 3-0 down inside 35 minutes they deserved pulled a goal back through Kerry Sauvage.
‘Unfortunately Leanne Bell then put the ball into her own goal in the last-minute of the half and that set them back a mini again.
‘The really dug in to dodge a many heavier defeat in the second half and despite having Lisa McLaughlin sent off on the hour after she was reminded for the second time it was a great effort.
‘Speaking to Tony [Hoyland] final night he feels very elated of how well the girls have performed throughout in what was the tougher of the two groups.
‘We’d loved to have played in the additional group because the Isle of Man and the Isle of Wight came first and second and Jersey defeated both isles in the three islands tournament we hosted last year.’
