Charity makes prom dreams come true
For high school students
2011 prom dresses, spring is associated with one major event: prom. As the countdown toward the magical night begins, many teens are already hitting department stores, boutiques and other retailers in search of the perfect dress for the perfect night.
For teens who can't afford the dresses, accessories and makeup the evening demands

For the past 13 years, GSP has been working with city and suburban groups to gather dresses, shoes, accessories and makeup to donate to high school juniors and seniors attending their prom. It was founded by Dorian Carter in the belief that every girl, regardless of her financial situation, should be able to attend prom.
Charity organizers choose three "boutique days" in April where they set up shop at a Chicago Public School and young women come live out their prom fairytales by choosing from thousands of dresses in every color and size imaginable.
"What started out as a small organization quickly gained national exposure after Oprah discovered it a few years ago," said Amy Ross, GSP board member.
The program serves between 1,700 and 2

This year the boutique days will be held on three consecutive Saturdays: April 2, 9 and 16 starting at 9 a.m. at McCorkle School, 4421 S. State St., Chicago.
"It's truly amazing when you get to the location on the morning of a boutique day," Ross said. "Hundreds of girls are lined up

GSP's success is due in part to local community groups, which work together to make it a success.
Donations are accepted at CPS schools and a variety of other locations throughout the city and suburbs. Northfield-based Zengeler Cleaners has been supporting GSP for the past seven years by taking in dresses, cleaning them and fixing them at no charge and then delivering them to the boutiques in ready-to-be-worn mint condition.
