Above the knee or ankle-length. Elegant or flirty. Brightly colored or black and white.
Prom dresses this season are all over the map.
That's good news for girls who want to express their individuality without having to conform to one dominant style.
"It's a funny season. It's really about expressing your own inner self," said Michael Shettel, vice president of design for the formalwear company Alfred Angelo.
There are different types of girls in every high school, Shettel said

"There are all looks. Dramatic ball gowns or draped mermaid silhouettes or slinky glamorous Hollywood looks," he said.
"You can accessorize it with metallics. If you're a rocker chick, you can show off some boots

That said, some looks are more popular than others -- and some options are newly available in stores.
"The big trend is about varying lengths, whether it's short and sassy, or long -- and even longer with a train

Dresses from the Alfred Angelo collection can be seen in an upcoming Disney film
short prom dresses, "Prom" -- a kind of "Crash" for the SAT set, in which a series of stories intersect at one high school's dance. All the dresses in the film, which opens April 29 and stars "Friday Night Light's" Aimee Teegarden and "Gossip Girl's" Yin Chang, are designed by Alfred Angelo.
The movie attempts to portray girls as they really appear at a prom, Shettel said.
The dresses the company designed for the film -- which will be sold in stores -- indicate that bright bold colors are another important statement of the season.
"Girls like to stand out," said Shettel. In the Alfred Angelo collection for this spring, "there's bold pinks

Both short and long dresses are in, agrees Jamie Bergman, a dress buyer for Nordstrom's junior department. Short dress trends include both form-fitting minis and full party dresses, she said, while longer options pleated chiffons or classic strapless beaded gowns.
"Prom is all about feeling pretty. It's about the details and having that special dress," she said.
She added: "Some of our favorite trends this year are lace, sequins, rosette details
prom dresses, pick-up hems, tulle and ruching."
Bergman said that bold colors are selling very well, with coral, royal blue and turquoise standing out as the favorites among shoppers.

And while accessories such as shoes

"Sometimes you have an amazing dress that speaks for itself," she said.
