To mark their 50th anniversary, Margaret wanted to to include something gold in either of her outfits or to wear gold accessories.

On Boxing Day, Margaret and her husband, Alan, will celebrate their golden wedding with their son and daughter, their spouses and five grandchildren. Then, on the first Sunday of the new year, the couple will be guests of honour at a celebratory lunch for 25 close friends in a hotel. Two very different occasions, each requiring a particular type of dress.

Ask Hilary live reader makeover: Margaret Beresford
Hilary Alexander helps one lucky reader to dress up for two golden wedding parties.
Margaret Beresford, of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, knew exactly what she wanted for Christmas - a makeover, with a little razzle-dazzle.
Margaret and Alan are both retired after a lifetime in the teaching profession. Alan was a lecturer in teach er training at Sheffield University, and Margaret a primary schoolteacher.

I loved the orange and gold Jacques Vert dress the moment I saw it, with its layered skirt. This is what I'll wear for the hotel launch. I was also very keen on the bright purple sweater. It was a very flattering length, and would go with any number of different trousers. I had the time of my life. Everyone looked after me very well, and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. The choice of clothes and accessories was first-class and has given me lots of ideas.
I prepared Margaret's skin with Lanc?me's Absolue Precious Cells Youth Activator for Eyes and Day Cream; Photogenic Lumessence foundation in "lys rose"; a dusting of translucent powder; and "beige pastel" concealer. I used Blush Subtil "brun rouge" on her cheeks, and a hint of gold highlighter towards the temples for extra sparkle. I lined her eyes with a brown Crayon Kohl, and then blended in "blue glacier" Ombre Absolu B20, finishing with Sparkly Bronze, and a brown mascara. The lipstick was L'Absolu Rouge in "Bordeaux fever",
Supras sneaker, with Juicy Tubes lipgloss in "toffee".
Margaret's hair was very fine and already cut quite short. She wanted it to look fuller and thicker, so I "point-cut" through the top and sides, using just the tips of the scissors and working in a zigzag pattern, rather than straight, blunt layers, to create texture. I applied L'Oréal Tecni. art "Volume Lift" mousse to expand the hair and give it a thicker feel. I blow-dried with a round brush,
supra society, and used straightening irons on just the ends of the hair. I finished with L'Oréal Tecni. art Gloss Wax, again, just on the very ends of the hair, and tweaked it to create a soft, feathery effect.
THE HAIR
THE VERDICTS
She has vivid memories of their wedding day in 1959 at Christ Church in Sheffield being "very windy and rainy". She cannot remember how much she spent on her bridal gown, but she does remember dyeing it navy blue afterwards so that she could wear it in the evenings. She has adhered to that habit of thriftiness ever since, shopping mainly at charity outlets for her favourite labels, such as Jacques Vert, Planet and Elvi.
THE MAKE-UP
"Please help,
nike shoes discount!" she wrote. "It's soon to be our golden wedding anniversary, and we have two big events coming up for it."
MARGARET'S VERDICT
"The first party will be at home,
beat headphones, very much a family day, with five children,
tods mens boots, aged between three and 13, so I need something practical and comfortable. At the same time, I would quite like to surprise them all, rather than being predictable. The lunch, on the other hand, is an entirely different affair. This is where I would really like to show my peers that I have worn well!"
I struck gold with an autumnal, floral-print dress by one of Margaret's preferred labels, Jacques Vert, which featured glossy, golden leaves. Another Jacques Vert ensemble was in soft lavender with a golden sheen, and Chesca came up trumps with a floaty three-piece in metallic silk. Any of these, I felt, would be ideal for the lunch. Margaret loves bright colours, so for the family party on Boxing Day, I found a vivid purple tunic-sweater with a sprinkling of sequins, which she could wear with classic trousers in a dark plum. Gold-toned accessories were no problem at all. Van Dal's bow-front slingbacks and a variety of clutches from Accessorize and John Lewis went with almost everything, while Marks & Spencer's offered plenty of gold necklaces and earrings.

I will be posting sporadically, but not my usual four or five posts a day
