Twenty-three year old Katie Lynn LaRoche is the newly crowned 2010 Miss Michigan. For the next year she will be fulfilling her duties as Miss Michigan,
Nike Jordan 5, travelling and speaking all over the country. She also will use her title to support her pageant platform - raising awareness about human trafficking and modern day slavery. According to Muskegon Chronicle,
Jordan 4, LaRoche said, "My hope is that I'll be kept very busy...I really want to speak in a lot of schools. I welcome speaking requests about human trafficking and the Miss Michigan organization."
LaRoche is fighting against human trafficking not just with words. Two years ago she founded a non-profit organization, One World, One Future to help bring this issue to the light. LaRoche spent some time in Nepal doing service work where she came face to face with human trafficking and modern day slavery. "That's when I really started to understand the issue," she said.
Human trafficking isn't just happening in some distant country in Asia or Africa. People are being enslaved and brought in to this country also. The United States State Department estimated in 2009 that up to 17,000 people are trafficked in the U.S. annually. LaRoche was interested to get involved with the Miss America organization because of the opportunity to bring awareness to the cause she feels so passionately about. "It's the service aspect...the opportunity to speak out about the things I've seen internationally and here," she said. In addition to Nepal, LaRoche traveled to Australia,
Nike Jordan 1, New Zealand,
Jordan Spizikes 2011, Africa, and Central America.

Maiti Nepal has eight such houses along the border of India and Nepal and has liberated 8914 women and children from the life of slavery since 1993.
Katie Lynn LaRoche says that she is very honored and excited. "My long-term goal is to do work with international development...I want to do work with human rights."
