I dual-boot my Vista Ultimate with Win7... got my e-mails et up to share
the data files depending on what is booted up. So far, from the short
amount of time I used it, Win7 seems to run rather nicely.
Answer Number 2 >> Re: Anybody Have Any Encounter With Windows7Beta?
I am dual booting XP on one HD and W7 on a separate HD.
I disconnected the XP drive and then installed W7
I use the F12 key during the boot sequence to pick which HD to boot
from...you would need to see if your BIOS
supports this option.
W7 works nice.. better than Vista which I have on another machine.

Everyone? I'm thinking about dual booting with it.
I have it in triboot with XP pro and Vista Ultimate.
I don't even waste any time booting to Vista, it is often a pig compared to either
XP or W7 on the same hardware.
The only issue I have with it is no driver for the ancient sound card.

Windows 7 works fine either as dual boot or as a single operating system.
Just remember it is 'beta' and can/will throw up some unexpected bugs so do
not use it on a production machine, just use it for testing purposes.

any chance you would consider some shift of strategy? something that

My Win 7 Experience Well, I tried Win 7 today and here is what I did. The system is a HP with AMD quad proc, COTS from BestBuy. Came with Vista Premium and is new, runs Vista OK after I turned off the power conservation sleep mode on the system. Turns out sleep/wake on Vista isn't always that reliable and messes up with Wireless LAN drivers and the TV PVR card. But setting the CPU to never sleep fixed all that. I added a second disk, using a newer SATA disk, unpluging the primary existing disk as to preserve it. Using the recovery media I made earlier, I recovered the Vista OEM image on the new disk. Always like to know if those OEM recovery things really work. And I will say this, it is better than other vendors as it properly restores the recovery partion too. Next to upgrade the system to Win 7 picking a clean install. I like clean installs as it doesn't carry the garbage forward including possible old driver issues. And it should give the OS a fair chance to run. Then installed drivers for the stuff Win 7 didn't recognize. Really it was just the keyboard and the PVR. Let the system settle in as Win 7/Vista have a propensity to do stuff within the background, waited until that seem to subside. Next to go by means of a bunch of tests. Previously I ran many of these tests with Vista Premium. Not really scientific, but close enough for a feel. First impressions were the Aero interface seemed much faster as did boot and shutdown. Boot and shutdown were tangibly and noticibly much faster. But on closer inspection Areo while being faster seemed choppy. Faster yes, but at the expense of being smooth. Likely just less frames being pushed to give the Areo feel. Got annoying to see the unsmooth flicker. Started to copy over the 600GB video libary. The network is 1000BT so it should go like smoke. Yawn, it was stupidly slow. Pulling out the performance meter it was about 25% utilized. Then after a few minutes it jumped to 75%, just to fall back. One CPU was pegged, so I turned off the differential compresion crap and tried again. A little less CPU use but the same eratic and low end network performance. Win 7 is clearly sub-par in this category. Even Vista faired moderately better. I found huge difference between pull copy and send copy. Pull is where you mount the other systems disk and copy in. Push copy is where the other system mounts a ahare to copy within the files. Pushing seemed twice as fast but still below par. Tried disk to disk copy. Slower. Big F here. My 5 year old AMD X2 running XP now using the same physical disk type as this system makes this Win 7 look like a pig. Memory uses was about 35% lower. Which is good because if you have a challeged PC within the 2-3GB range, free memory helps. All my quad machines have 8GB and 64 bit. Seems like the system has bugs too. The gadgets to the right, some combinations overlaped. While unlike Vista which is automatic spacing, you can waste space by spacing them something like the desktop and they allign wasting space. This is often a step backwards from Vista. Menu choices have been reorganized again. Seemed more simple and much better organized. This part should have been in Vista. But now that I am used to Vista
Purchase Windows 7, just another UI change to learn to deal with. Good part is Vista and Linux on the first primary disk have no problems removing Win 7 partitions on the second drive to get the space back. Conclusions Win 7 just got kicked off the disk as it isn't ready yet. Needs a service pack or two. And for business use in tough times, Win 7 will have the same issues as Vista. But it will get acceptance more so, only because it is being force fed to new purchasers and XPee driver issues are starting for being an issue. Win 7 is Vista regurgitated and needs more work. Can't say overall anything has really improved much if at all. Maybe even digression as some new code to learn how to deal with and wait for patches. Win 7 sure isn't going to hurt Ubuntu and Mac acceptance.
Quite An Encounter I gave Vista a one-month try. I am back to XP and soooo happy. I feel like I have left a very dark place. Vista needs a lot of work. It was a constant problem/worry. It is slow and quirky and not ready for prime time. I still have my software and I will put it away for possible future use once Microsoft develops an update to cure all the bugs. It almost seems like with Vista, Microsoft was trying to imitate the Mac operating system but they didnt do it nearly as well and frankly I don't like the Mac operating system so much either. Microsoft should do its own thing and do it well. Certainly they have the resources. Anyway thats just my opinion and I am happy to become reuninted with XP. I didnt appreciate it till it was gone. :-) Jim
Unbelievable Encounter Having purchased a new desktop on line a couple of weeks ago, I noted that the ONLY OS offered was Vista Basic. Basic worked fine out of the box, but after upgrading my brand new Dell E521 (windows index of 4.2) (AMD 3800+, 1gb of DDR RAM, 256mb ATI Radeon graphics card, Vista Home Basic), I started experiencing problems right away. The first is an alert after boot up of problem with THE modem driver, this problem sort of just went away after several restarts for other reasons. The second and most obvious is an alert after boot up that the Sonic DLA (sound) driver is not installed (it is of course) and there is no sound. Went to rthe Sonic web site, to ensure having latest driver, and downloaded/installed a recommended patch. No change. The printer (lLexmark 2470) which worked fine under Basic, also alerted No Driver Installed, so uninstalled the printer then went to lexmark to download/install the latest Vista driver and software. The print function now works, but the accompanying All-In-One fax-print-scan software does not function (driver not installed), and Device manager still says the driver is not installed. Why does the upgrade cause all this malfunction that Basic did not? More importantly, how to fix the sound and printer problems? I don't recall ever having a messier upgrade and unless I can get this resolved fairly soon, I'm going uninstall and do a clean restore of Vista, then demand the money paid for the upgrade be refunded. 2 business days and no response to my support email. Tried support chat but it doesnt recognize my (verified correct) PID. -- techknot
Summary Of Encounter So Far (re Windows main: should all three options [Comment, Question, Suggestion] have a voting option?) Route taken on this computer: XP Pro > Upgrade to Vista 32 bit > Install of Vista 64 bit The upgrade option seems quite clunky once installed. Removing video carad drivers and other stuff left over from the upgrade route seemed to provide a more stable and swifter platform. Doing an install of 64 bit Vista to a different platter with dual booting options to 32 bit upgrade or 64 bit fresh install showed without an doubt at all that the 64 bit was far better in almost every respect. Although backing my data to an external hard drive was completed before trying any of the Vista options it looks as if no data has been lost at all. For a while access rights to my data seemed a bit tight with a requester appearing to confirm that the data could be changed. However, either by design, by Vista or by some other circumstance this is now ok - the requesters no longer appear. On the downside SnagIt 8 (upgraded from SnagIt 7) no longer appears to get as friendly or useful as it was before (I'll pop them an email asking for a 64 bit variant, might as well ask I suppose?) This may have been partly due to purchasing a single user version of the software. I chose to remove a fully working version from the 32 bit side and install it on the 64 bit side but it seems some complexities of the software key came into play plus a lost UNIDRV.DLL that the install could not find and "might make Windows unstable". The trial works but SnagIt printer is not installed. Workaround: FastStone Screen capture utility
"Experience Index" What is this?? and what do the numbers mean?? what is good? not so good?..
My Upgrade Knowledge First of all I was able to install the new prerelease Vista but very little worked. I could never install the last Beta version on my computer. Very little worked on this version including Quicken 2000, MSOffice 2000, free AVG 7.1, Zone Alarm, my Epson printer(CX5200), my modem, Nero 6.6 etc. did not work.
I tried to download a file and that didn't work. I hope this is not the case with the final release of Vista, and of course if that is true I will NEVER buy it. Please comment. begin 666 sad.gif

My Vista Wow Expertise. Hi All, Sorry if my story goes on..... On vistas release I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade, my current pc was not really up for the task so I decided to build a new pc for the event. Hardware: Foxconn 945 7MC Series motherboard
Pentium D 3.4Ghz Dual Core
2GB Ram
250GB SATA Hard Disk.
Sony DVD Writer
My current Happague PVR 250 PCI TV Card I originally wanted to go with Home Premium but due to the fact it did not have remote desktop capabilities (as I remote acces alot) I had to go down the Ultimate route.
I purchased an OEM version of Vista Ultimate whilst purchasing the hardware for my new computer. Finally the package arrived, I loaded the dvd into the drive and began installation. All went well to start until the installation got to "Completing Installation" then the nightmare began. At this point the computer locked up so eventually I rebooted for being informed
my installation had failed, no attempt at recovery at all (oh well, stuff happens). So i retried the installation same thing. After about of day of smashing my head on a wall I finally
discovered that the problem was the APIC setting within the bios, After disabling this the installation completed. I then reenabled the APIC setting on the bios. Phew i thought, until I realised that vista was only using one core of the processor, even though two processors showed in Device Manager. After another 2 days of scratching my head, I gave up and did a complete system backup using the new vista backup system, and loaded my retail copy of Windows XP
onto the machine, this time I had no issues and XP detected both cores. After running XP for a day I realised I had spent alot of money getting a vista machine just
to do what my old pc could of done, and had done well without issue for years. So I bit the bullet again and did a restore of my vista (which I must say the whole backup/restore system is top notch!) and my pc was back to where I had left off a day ago). After another day of messing around I finally found the "Detect HAL" check box in MSCONFIG and selected it. On reboot the computer locked up, I reset it and voila
I was running 2 processor cores. Next came software install day, I had to repurchase my nero to v7.00 for it to get vista compatible and I purchased Office 2003 Home Edition to replace my dated Office 2000, at this
point I also found out that alot of my previous software tools would not install, but nothing I didn't expect hay this can be a new operating system isn't it ???? Well I am at the point where I am installing each piece of software one by one and one thing is becoming apparent I keep experiencing complete machine lock ups when installing certain
software, a system restore brings it back to live but tracing this is becoming time consuming to say the least (I am nearly a week into the process) Surely software that has been 5 years from the making could of waited a few more weeks/months to ensure it functioned correctly before release!!!! This is by far the buggiest operating system microsoft have released, and no service pack due to at least xmas ??? If things continue the way they are I will have to put this down to a VERY EXPENSIVE mistake and head back down the XP PRO ROAD A sadened, now pennyless user!
My Upgrade Encounter Hello folks, Tried an upgrade from RC1 - 5600 to 5728 twice with the same outcome. Just thought I would share my story briefly with you. History: Installed Beta 2 on my system cleanly without any issues several months ago when CPP made it available. When RC-1 5600 I attempted to upgrade three different times without success. Each would get to completing installation, please wait while Windows starts for the first time and (with Upgrade to rc-1 attempt I received a no disk in drive dialogue box on all occasions with all options available causing a failed install. On next reset it took me to a restart caused by BSOD - eternally. Fortunately the rollback feature worked and was able to return to Beta 2. Finally the only resolution was to install a clean copy of 5600. Present: Again attempted to upgrade Vista, this time RC1-5600 towards the latest available 5728. Initially I got a warning and installation stop due to Nero 6.6 and Nero Virtual Drive. Next going into add/remove programs I removed Nero Burning ROM but Vista would no allow me to uninstall the Virtual Driver it had not allowed me to install - program blocked. Tried setup again and it gave me a warning about the Virtual Drive but continued to install. Installation got by way of about 63% of finalizing installation and stopped. After some time the system reset and back we are to the BSOD at start up. After going towards the option to roll back installation during boot I returned to RC-1 5600. I went to Nero's site at that point and downloaded/ran there removal tool, reset the computer and ran it a second time at which point it could not locate a Nero Installation. It previously had found both Nero and Virtual drive software. At that point I again began to install Vista 5728. At the same point inside the installation the exact same thing occurred requiring another roll back to 5600. At this point I am not ready to even think about upgrading my XP installation as this has too many valuable and time consuming to install and reconfigure. I honestly hope MS can come up with a product which will be capable of upgrading their own OS by the time they are done. BTW, the error was IRQ_NO_LESS_THAN_EQUAL or similar. Also all drivers in my system are the drivers provided with RC-1, there have been no OEM third party drivers or services (other than Nero's Virtual Drive which wasn't actually fully installed and was definitely removed) installed on this machine. Neither are there any exotic peripherals added. Just my knowledge...

My Expertise So Far With Vista Here are my completely biased initial impressions of Vista. My first Vista knowledge was with Beta 2. I am a professional inside the software development space and have been using Windows for years, and of course nothing can beat the knowledge of going from NT/2000 to XP... at least not yet ;-) Let me preface this by saying that I recognize that a ton of work has gone into Vista, Office, and IE, and I don't wish to overlook that, but as a very busy user that needs to get things done, the following has been my knowledge so far. So first I installed Vista on a VPC as I always do with new beta software. It took a long time and performance was dismal. I hunted around and found on some weblogs that supposedly a new version of virtual machine additions is in the works that will fix this, so I guess I will have wait. Fair enough. Then I decided to install it on a laptop (Dell D600, reasonable processor speed, 60 GB drive, 1 GB ram). I must have burned the image to about ten DVDs before I got that would install all the way via. Is this a Vista problem with DVD drivers? Dunno. In any case, what a nightmare. Finally after it was installed, I did something stupid. I tried to install our corporate Trend Micro OfficeScan client on it, wanted to protect myself from evil. Well, the install failed at some point (some kind of IO device stops working according to Windows) it doesn't run, but Vista also won't let me uninstall it. Ok, I didn't check to see if it would be compatible, so my bad. Next I installed
Office 2007 beta 2, that seemed to install just fine, although I couldn't get Virtual CD Control Panel working, but I blame that one on the remnants of my failed Trend installation. I've been trying to use Vista Beta 2 as well as
Office 2007 Beta 2 as much as possible to see how I like it and what it has to offer in day to day use. So far, I have found it takes me longer to do just about anything I might need to than it did before. Sure, the new desktop pictures look great and the Konfabulator-like gadgets are cool, but when I went to add the laptop to our domain it took me 30 minutes to figure where the commands went. So, more gripes: Where did "Start -> Run" go? It took me half hour to map a network drive - finally I figured out that I needed to press one of the ALT keys to see the menus. I typed the wrong WEP key for our corporate wireless network - Vista even told me that might be the problem, but even after spending about 20 minutes trying to figure out how to change it, I finally resorted to an Internet search and found the instructions. (I'm the guy who ends up helping my neighbors with this stuff, so I think they are going to become doomed when they get Vista.) I have to add our internal sharepoint site to IE as a trusted site in XP in order to get it to stop prompting me for my domain log in every time I click something - but when I did this in Vista/IE7, it didn't help. I've entered my domain credentials about a dozen times today while using our Sharepoint site. I went to the Cisco site to log in and get the beta VPN client - entered my login and told IE to remember it. I think I entered it at least 3 more times after that. I also had to click on the that popup warning bar at least twice to finally download what I wanted. It seems like Vista is constantly asking me if I am really really sure that some program that I just clicked on is allowed to run or not. Hey - didn't I give myself admin rights already? Then there is Outlook and Word. Actually, I don't have much to gripe about in Outlook, other than the strange but somehow familiar items that the new right-hand side to do bar was telling me I should be looking at- oh, and it never popped up any reminders to tell me about the meetings I had scheduled. With Word and Excel, I have to admit that I was completely lost. I couldn't find most of the features I often use very easily; my colleagues had the same problem. Well, I can see how some of these security features will be beneficial, even if I do find they are obstacles to productivity. Within the long run, if they stop something from wiping my hard drive, I will be glad. As for things like Disk Defragmentor no longer showing me a graphical analysis much less a percent complete, and for things being moved around or hard to find - I am sure that this is just a learning curve. However, I am struggling to see the payoff for this investment in time - what are the great new features that are going to knock my socks off and save me time? I am sure there are some, and I will read more about them. I'd recommend an installation option that adds something like a power user mode or It professional mode - something that gives me back the Run command on the start menu and doesn't hide all the useful tools and commands I am used to. That's my expertise so far with Vista... I will continue using it (along with IE7 and
Office 2007) and I am sure I will eventually start to see all the benefits and new features.
My Experience With 5728 So Far I downloaded build 5728 last night to my surprise the Akamai download manager worked very well however there wasn't much bandwidth. after the download finished I burnt the Iso file to disk this also went very well I ran the disk from within build 5600 and chose the upgrade option I found it to go very slow the entire process took almost 3 hours
On a special note I had accidently left my usb stick plugged in with readyboost enabled and to my surprise this didn't effect the upgrade installation at all. and after the upgrade installation readyboost was still enabled.
The only other issue I had was my sound drivers(soundmax). Under build 5600 I had to reinstall them in compatibility mode for winxp in order to have sound in media center, after the upgrade installtion I had to reinstall them again in compatibilty mode to have sound in media center. All my previously installed programs under build 5600 still work under build 5728 after the upgrade installation Other than that I had no BSOD's at all and no other issues so far It seems like MSFT may have got it right this time great job
Expertise Rating Running Vista Ultimate (32 bit)... Trying to determine the "Windows Experience Rating" I run "update my score" from the
"Rate and improve your computer's performance" screen... WinSat.exe
executes, but no progress dialog appears as it did when Vista was first
installed... I know WinSat's running because I can watch it in process
explorer, and it does seem to updating because when it finishes I can
"refresh" the screen where I started it and the last rating date and time is
updated... I would guess that the link or registry key that executes WinSat has some
switch set that turns off the progress dialog... The following key has
values set as follows: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\RunMRU a - c:\windows/system32\winsat.exe\1
b - c:\windows/system32\winsat.exe /formal\1
c - c:\windows/system32\winsat.exe /formal\1 Is the "\1" the culprit ?
Rc2 Install Encounter My PC is an Abit NF7 S2G which has an NVidia nForce2 Ultra 400
chipset.
I have 2x 256MB Ballistix Memory modules set as Dual channel giving
512MB at 400
I have an FX5900 NVidia Graphics card, 2x PATA HDD, 2xDVD drives and
1xSATA.
On the primary IDE drive I have WINXP and on the SATA just data.
I purchased a Hitachi 320GB drive to fit as IDE slave
Office Professional, partitioned it
from WINXP to 105/100/100 and installed Vista RC2 on the first
partition starting the install from within WINXP in order to preserve
the Disk partition numbering, (I believe that is so?).
I have installed three times onto this drive and the first time the
install failed at the point when it was about to boot into windows to
set up Date & time.
I couldn't get anywhere so I installed again over the previous Vista.
The second time it failed to come up after rebooting from setting date
and time but after entering Safe Boot it came up normally and appeared
to work for a few minutes before totally locking up after trying to
start Media Center.
Safe Boot would not reliably start on this occasion as well.
The third time it seemed to go well and I did nothing more after
getting for the desktop but set the security options and try a reboot.
It failed to come up, sticking, as with the second attempt, at the
green bars before the Vista spash backdrop.
It would enter Safe Mode though, so I took a look at the event log.
It was full of "Driver detected a controller error on
\Device\Ide\IdePort0 Event 11" errors.
My first thought was a duff new drive or bad IDE cable.
I booted into WINXP and ran disk diags on the Vista partition choosing
repair options.
It finished OK.
I copied a 8.6GB file to and from anothe partition on the same drive
and there were no errors from the WINXP event log.
I suspect that the Vista IDE driver for this chipset is at fault.
Any comments/suggestions? --
regards Madden
Poor Encounter With Rc1 I had the first public release of Beta 2 (5384?) installed on a separate partition with reasonable results and decided to try RC1 (5600) to see if there was any improvement in performance.
My first irritation came with the installation. The upgrade option didn't specify if it was going to upgrade my Vista installation or my XP so I wouldn't risk it and chose a new install. The installation then proceeded without any problem but as soon as the desktop had been built the performance became impossibly slow. I had constant fan noise from my machine and, as soon as I tried to do anything, everything ground to a halt and I had to power off by hand to shut down. Over a period of time I managed to turn off some of the services such as indexing but installing drivers was impossible - it just kept hanging.
Believing the installation might be at fault I formatted the Vista partition and reinstalled - the performance was even worse and I didn't get past the welcome screen on the first login.
My system is quite old - an Advent T9100 with a P4 3.2 GHZ processor, 1.5 GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce FX5500 256 MB RAM, and a fairly new 200GB HD with 50GB on the Vista partition - but that should be more than adequate for Vista and it appeared to be so on build 5384.
I have sent feedback to MS but couldn't send any precise information to them as the installation just locked up when I tried to.
Very disappointing. Robin

From Expertise To An Amature Os! Vista gives me the feeling of an amateur OS made by programmers that have no knowledge in designing software. Did Microsoft fire all the knowledgeable people who made the superb Win2k and XP,
and brought in new blood right out of collage to work on vista? Giving new opportunities to young people is good but unleashing an OS like vista is really a crime! MS really blew it this time!
My Upgrade Expertise Sadly the upgrade from Beta 2 to RC-1 ended as a minor disaster on several different occasions. The positive is the option to roll back the upgrade worked on several different occasions to get me back to a fairly functional Beta 2. Now the issues: First complained it could not do an upgrade from a DVD boot... fine. Went under Beta 2 and once the space issue was resolved it stopped install cold on Nero 7 and its need to get removed - with no option to proceed. OK, went to Ahead's site and got there clean tool - removed Nero, OK. Now RC-1 finally decided it would install, Great!! Well installation got some where near (based guessed on progress bar - green ~shutter~ at the bottom) 75% through and this wonderfully informative dialoged box popped up stating "Disk Not Found" with the option to cancel, retry or continue. What it was looking for is unknown to date as there was no further info provided. Retry = no go, continue= no go (unless you click it several times which leads to a black screen and then a reboot) and cancel I did not try... On both occasions the system eventually reboots and goes to a wonderfully informative BSOD every time there after. Of course Safe Mode offers up the helpful message that setup can not complete in Safe Mode so restart your un-searchable computer. Next we try booting from the DVD and choosing to repair the system. Well, unfortunately that has changed under Vista so there is now a lovely (and apparently useless in my case) list of options which do not help in any useful sense. The diagnostic for start-up problems (figured I would give it a try as my computer at this point would not start) ran forever, or may have as I let it run for about 45 minutes and it hadn't diagnosed a problem as of that point so canceled. I would really like to get the upgrade portion of setup working for my own peace of mind for the future but will probably have to bite the bullet and try a clean install. The issue with that is the question about whether even that will work. It definitely did with Beta 2 but... It is not really sour grapes that causes this message as I know it is pre-release code but rather the totally useless dialoged box and the inability of Vista's start up diagnostics to develop an "automatic repair" as it states or even say it found nothing to repair. It makes me shudder to think about upgrading my faithful, to date, XP installation when Vista is actually ready for prime time. Fortunately I have been able to keep my XP install completely out of the problem by making it totally invisible to Vista while it is installing. I'm going to try re-re-turning the DVD and having a copy in both of my DVD drives on the next upgrade attempt. Maybe it will find that nebulas whatever that it can not find on the duplicate DVD?? Who knows... Enough mild rant - just curious to know if everyone else has had such a time trying to upgrade their BETA 2 and if they might have some thoughts... Thanks,
Len
My Beta 2 Knowledge I have a Compaq v2405us w/ati radeon xpress 200m with dual port video out. when I tried to activate monitor 2, vista went mad and destroyed itself, literally. the partition became unreadable and would not even boot in safe mode with command prompt. I booted with knoppix on a dvd and made the windows-xp partition active. when in xp, i deleted the partition and the disk manager did not recognize the format. so I will try it again with the drivers that came with my computer for xp. perhaps it will work better.

My Knowledge With Vista Hi Everyone , just wanted to say I have had Vista now for going on a month. I bought The home update version, Vista home premium. I read up on everything I could before installing it on This computer. The only proplem I had was getting my sound to work , So I reloaded the update and did another install and this time my sound updated it self and now I have sound working plus I got things I accidently deleted( That I wanted Back lol). But over all I `m very satisfied with its performance. -- Sincerely Kathy

Poor Expertise With Rc1 Revisited All that follows applies to 32bit RC1:
Following from my posts of 9th. September I have attempted 2 more installations of RC1. For the first I put an extra HD in my machine (150GB) that I formatted NTFS and attempted to install to. Half way by means of the install I got an error message saying that Windows couldn't "prepare" the disk and the installation would be aborted. That was followed by several "roll back" reboots that eventually became a reboot cycle that I was only able to stop by catching the boot screen and changing it "previous version of windows". I then removed the second HD, cleaned up the detritus on my "C" (XP) drive and tried again using an empty 50GB partition on my first disc. By this time I had unplugged the card reader from my machine and removed all USB devices.
The installation went well but Vista froze about 1 minute after the welcome screen. I then booted into safe mode and found that to work very well indeed and I was able to turn off some of the services and install the latest Nvidia drivers for RC1 (downloaded using XP).
Booting back into Vista I found the machine would run for a few minutes but then freeze if I tried to do anything. It was impossible to run windows update (which won't run in safe mode) so do not know if any subsequent updates would improve matters. It was also impossible to provide any significant feedback to MS from with Vista.
I note that I am not the only person with this problem and here is my machine specification within the hope that this will find its way to MS: Processor

My First Knowledge With Vista - Can'T Access Web With Ie7 Hello (this is great, I just discovered the msnews server!). My new laptop finally arrived from Dell with Vista installed. This is my first exposure to Vista. The machine is installed with Vista Business. I use a home wired-only network, with two other PCs (running XP Home) and a networked printer attached. My workgroup is named "HOME". I have two problems that I don't know how to solve. All machines are "pingable" from one other, and the XP Home machines have the latest updates applied. - I can't access the internet using the pre-installed IE7. I managed to copy across and install Firefox, and this works fine. Any ideas why this could be? - Also, when I select "Network and Sharing Center", only the new laptop is shown connected to "Internet" through "Network". I supose that "Network" corresponds to my workgroup "HOME". When I click on "View full map", one of the other PCs is shown connected towards the LAN (shared maps on this PC are accessible). The other PC (its shared maps are not accessible) and the printer (its shared maps are accessible) are listed under the heading "The following discovered device(s) can not be placed in the map". What does this mean? Can any person help me? Many thanks,
Paul
Vista Knowledge Rating Running Vista Ultimate (32 bit)... Determing my "Windows Experience Rating" I run "update my score" from the
"Rate and improve your computer's performance" screen... WinSat.exe
executes, but no progress dialog appears as it did when Vista was first
installed...
Knowledge Assessment Fails I've just installed Vista x64 (clean install), and have not yet installed any other programs (other than motherboard updates, audio and graphice drivers). The experience index was at its base 1.0 rating. I then proceeded to install updates, and also the nVidia drivers version 162.18 for my MSI NX8600GT series graphic card. After this, I ran the assessment again. However, it fails right at the end with the following error:
"The assessment or other operation did not complete successfully. This is due to an error reported from the operating system, driver, or other component." The assessment stays at 1.0. I checked the Event Viewer, and found a series of errors with code 4375:
------------------
Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update 929916-82_RTM_PACKAGE from package KB929916(Security Update) into Wird bereitgestellt(Staging) state
-----------------
Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package KB929916_6 (Security Update) into Standard(Default) state
----------------- Will the assessment problems cause functionality issues? Would uninstalling it have and effect on the problem? Thanks,

How Can I Opt Out Of Windows Customer Experience? Hello. After wading by way of my task scheduler, it appears that I am participating in the Windows Customer Experience Program. (I don't remember opting in.) I would like to opt out or disable these types of communications, only I don't know how. Would some kind soul please assist? Thanks

Xp Prof/Vista Knowledge I have been using both XP Prof and Vista Business for 2 months on a home built computer with 100% Vista approved hardware and 2 GB memory.
I am using the following software: Office 2003, Photoshop CS, MS money 2004, Norton 360, Perfect Disc 8, Nero and Acronis (both latest build).
I use 3 WD Raptor hard discs, 1 for XP, 1 for Vista and the third for images and general use. I use XP prof one week and Vista the next by restoring the previously made images and do not use dual booting. (with Acronis this switching is done very quickly)
With this system I now have a better opinion of the pros and cons from the day-to-day use of both systems. My conclusion is that in my case there is no real reason to permanently switch to Vista. Both system perform OK, but I find Vista a bit slower in booting and shutting down and also the Perfect disc defragmentation seems to do a more thorough job in XP (judging by the graphic display of the results) Also I dislike constantly having to confirm changes that I wish to make in certain Vista files.
As far as security is concerned, Vista is perhaps a better OS, but in my case that does not play a role, since I always have a 100% working image.
I would appreciate comments from other XP/Vista users.
Vista - A Good Knowledge After reading about many Vista problems and negative opinions, I thought I would share a good Vista and Compaq expertise. My old XP machine died and I went off to Futureshop to buy a new PC. I need to run XP for a couple old applications not supported in Vista. FS only sells preloaded Vista PC’s, and that’s fine as I have my retail copy of XP to install on it. I chose an inexpensive $600 CDN Compaq as it’s just a second PC but needed for the old applications. Ya’ gotta love FS, right away the guy tries to sell me the extended warranty. No thanks I tell him. Then he says, well you can pick up the PC in about three hours, as we have to get Vista ready for you. The cost is $80 but well worth it as you would not be able to do it yourself. No thanks, I tell him, I’ll muddle through it somehow. Besides, I’ll be installing XP instead. He say’s you can’t as there are no drivers available. I had done my homework and knew most drivers were available from the device manufacturer. So I get the PC home, plugged in and finished the Vista install in about 10 minutes. Can’t figure out what the $80 does. What a lot of crap Compaq install with their PC’s. It wasn’t running very fast, even with an encounter rating of 3.4. I make the recovery DVD’s, test them, plug in my XP Pro CD and restart. I delete the recovery partition and in all create three partitions. I install XP. All the drivers were readily available on the internet except for the NIC of all things. Took me an hour to find it, but I did and all devices are working correctly. I activate XP and do all the updates as well as install my applications. It’s running great, quite fast really. So I get thinking about the Vista COA on the side of the tower. I own it, it comes with this PC and can be legally installed. Obviously not with the recovery DVD if I want to keep XP. So I get out my retail version of Vista Ultimate (purchased for my main PC)
Office 2007 Pro Plus Key, and use that media with the Compaq COA to install it, dual booting with XP. While the install is running, I’m thinking, I hope I can find all the drivers for everything. 35 minutes later, I’m at the Vista desktop. Drivers had been installed for every device! I do the updates and activation thing and install some software. It runs beautifully! Fast and responsive. What a shame the PC manufacturer’s do not incorporate the OS media with a new PC. Anyway, I’ve been using Vista since RC1 and really like it. Even on the lower end PC I just purchased, it definitely rivals XP in terms of performance. And the eye candy is very nice indeed.
My Installation Encounter With Vista Rc1 X86 Ik yesterday installed Vista RC1. Because I have had installation problems with beta2 and pre-rc1 I hoped that this version would solve these problems (I couldn't install Vista at all). My computer configuration is:
Mobo Asus K8N-E deluxe (AMD socket 754) AMD processor 3000+
2 x 1024 Kingston memory
1 x 300 Gb harddisk with 4 partitions (C:Vista, D:Documents, E:Recordings, F:Backup)
Geforce 6600LE with 256 Mb memory attached with dvi-d to hitachi plasma tv
Hauppauge MCE500 tv-card
Realtek onboard sound attachewd with SPdif to surround-system
bluetooth mouse and keyboard (when installing I temporary use a serial mouse and keyboard)
Microsoft remote receiver (USB) for remote control The installation went well (clean install; formatted the Vista drive from within the installation DVD of Vista) but after the installation finished (30 minutes later) I got a loginscreen with a 'other users' button. When clicking on this button it says 'wrong name or password'. I didn't have a option to ad a user so this was obvious a installation error. After rebooting and booting into safe mode I got a message that finalizing the installation couldn't be done in safe mode and I had to restart and boot into normal mode to finalize the installation (so it wasn't finished after the final reboot of the installation). After doing so I got a error message that some module couldn't start (I presume it is the module to ad a new user) The only thing I could do was a hard reset. After the reboot I finaly got the screen to ad a new user (pffff...finaly). I was able to ad a user but when logging in I again get a error message that some services don't work and I get a black screen (no background immage) with only the start-button. I restarted the system but when booting up I shortly see a BSOD (blue screen of death) and the system restarts. After the restart It finaly boots into Windows with the background picture and all so it finaly looked fine. I looked into the hardware section to see if all drivers were installed well and it was (no exclamation sign), so all the problems I had while installing looked like they didn't had anything to do with missing or wrong drivers. This morning when booting up Vista it logs in but when I click the start-button I get a BSOD with a message about memory management (there is already a post about this message that more users have had). I never had these problems or this BSOD with XP. So I wonder, is the RC1 version not 100% ready or is something with my hardware that causes problems. I hope microsoft can look into it.
"Out Of Box Experience" In Build 5536 (Pre-Rc1) Hello, I downloaded and tried to install vista pre-rc1 (5536) today.
i insert vista dvd while running win xp and started setup (new install on clean partition, no upgrade).
after a few minutes i was prompt to restart. so i restarted.
the new vista boot menu was shown, and i selected "Windows Setup".
then after a few seconds with a black screen, my screen was painted green and white (fading). no error, no message, no cursor,.. nothing! only a painted screen! after 5 minutes of waiting in front of a white screen, i restarted my system and select "Windows Setup" again. the same problem. i tried to reinstall but without success. i also tried to boot from vista setup dvd, but also without success. i've heard that this problem is called "out of box experience". system:
- notebook acer travelmate 8101
- ati x700
A Good Burn Knowledge I have noticed that many people have had trouble burning the Vista .iso image to DVD, so I approached this task with some anxiety. Since it worked perfectly for me (twice) I thought I would report how I did it. .iso details: Download of MSDN July06 CTP, both x86 and x64 versions (about 3GB each)
Checked the SH-1 hashes using free program HashCalc - both were good. Burn details: Host platform: Windows 2000 SP4
Burner: NEC 3550A Dual 16x DVD+RW/-RW/CD-RW (48x/32x/48x),16x DVD
Burn software: BurnCdcc (free)
Media: Maxell single layer 16x DVD+R Because the download was on a different machine from the burner, I actually did the burn over the network. I also let BurnCdcc choose the burn speed, and set it to ReadVerify and Finalize. I don't know what speed was actually used, but each burn took about 20 minutes, including the verification. Both images installed without problems. David Wilkinson
Vista Install Experience My test system is really a Dell 2.4 GHz with 1GB RAM and lots of disk. Thus far I have installed Vista 6 times. The first four were 5308 and the last two 5384 builds. Half of those installs were either DOA or quick working in some key way within the first day. The same DVD was used in each case. My first 5384 lost all the menus within the first few reboots. Could not get them back. Reinstalled a second time. That install went OK, but performance was roughly only 10% of XP performance of same PC. Performance was much much worse than in 5308. Am now doing the third 5384 install to see what occurs there. Same system has 95/98/ME/2000/XP/2003 installed in various partitions. All of these installed without issues and all run at similar peformance rates. 9.x are generally slower and NT kernels faster. Same hardware in each case (basic PC plus a modem and RAID card). Ed
Bizzar Vista Expertise i have been using windows vista ultimate for about 6 months now and to be honest, i have love it. It is on my computer at work and i am the guy that gets to try out. however, recently, i have notice that not all my icons are showing for know file extensions (at first i thought it was limited to MS
office 2007 products) but have now realized that it is random and widespread. i tried doing a system restore three different times and they all failed. i have sent the reports but no solutions are available. i have also noticed that the program uninstall feature has not been working with some programs. for some examples of what program has lost their extensions: adobe acrobat, all
office 2007 pro products, roxio, hp update, adobe premiere, maxwell render, quicktime, and sure thing CD labeler my question is what would cause this? I can't remember doing anything that would affect my machine like this. They only thing that i can think might be releated is that i changed the owenership of my C drive. However, i did that on my home laptop (which has vista home basic) with no problems. any ideas?
My Dual Boot Experience (Bad Very Bad) Overall a very bad experience with a series of system errors. Started with simple blues screen errors when trying to boot into XP progress to more serious problems. The early problems were resolved by rebooting again. Then booted into XP was advised that there had been major hardware changes that required activation of XP. There had been no hardware changes since before installing XP. But the capping error happen this morning when I was unable to boot into XP. The blue screen stated Bad sys config Info. Thankfully I had a pre Vista disk image and was able to get my system up and running again without Vista since the boot manager was no longer installed. Reformated the drive that contained Vista. No more starnge system errors.
My Vista Expertise Is Good! Hi all, I installed the public beta on my PC thats in my living room hooked up on the TV. I have no other monitor. To my surprise Media Centre was installed with Vista by default. I've hooked it all up - set up the media centre and I can now pause live TV, schedule recording etc etc - I was not able to get that working in XP with the Hauppauge software (or properly in ubuntu with Freevo OR MythTV) Everything worked on my TV by default - it's brilliant. I use the Linksys CIT200 Skype DECT phones as my home phone - I have 2 of them. One upstairs and one downstairs. The most recent skype beta is installed and the linksys software installed and runs in XP compatibility mode. It all works brilliantly. Vista has crashed once - when I was browsing shared videos on an XP machine using the Media Centre. Thats the only trouble I've had with it. My graphics card is an NVIDIA FX5200 - everything was setup and working by default after Vista was installed. No complaints here. Well done Bill - I've been an ubuntu user for the past 12 months and you've won me back :) Grats
My Encounter Installing Vista Very quickly, had a very unfavorable encounter attempting to install Vista.
1. Pc was Vista compatible, (except insufficient video for new interface_
2. Failures
a. Setup failed after detecting Norton Ghost, and Mcafee Security
(no capability to dynamically remove/disable those applications)
b. Setup failed for lack of disk capacity(twice), after finding the requisite amount of disk (about 6.8 gig), 'error to write to disk on installation', and received message that '40gig of disk' was required). Freed up another 2gig of disk.
c. Setup was extremely slow (many hours, win xp about 1/2 hour)
d. Setup next was unable to access internet , stated incompatible Ethernet controller, thinkpad x31 Intel/Pro 100 VE internet adapter
e. No restart capability with installer. Restart (although not required) asks for product id early in the process, so it has to get input over and over again. I gave up. Need to at a minimum have a set of latest drives for the most likely found hardware devices. Now very uncertain as the the risk/reward of an upgrade to this product. Encounter very much worse than the upgrade to windows xp.
The First Setup Knowledge And First Pain Vista-RC1.Setup doesn`t like the partition I choosed for vista. It won`t let me know why, perhaps it wants me to play guessing :-) What a playfull setup! Whatever: I spent 5 hours moving disks, cables, switching jumpers and reformated the partition like 10 times to make it work. Cool
Genuine Office 2007! Reasons:
~ Target disk MUST be /dev/hda (primary master)
~ Target partition MUST be marked active (bootable)
~ Target disk MUST be NTFS (and not UDF)
~ Target disk MUST use default alocation unit (cluster) size. 64KB is not permited -- strange why? My primary installation is Windows 2003-SP1 enterprise server and boots from /dev/hda1 NTFS 64KB clusters. What's the largest supported cluster size by setup? Cheers, after the whole pain, setup accepted /dev/hda2 (primary master, partition 2). After the first setup phase, I moved the disk to /dev/hdd (secondary slave) and reconnected the two other dynamic disks. Setup completed successfully! Finally there are two more problems:
1. I used diskpart to change the target partition's drive letter to T:, but after the installation it was using C:. How do I force a custom drive letter?
2 How do I create a boot menu, to select startup partition at boot time? I want to choose between:
/dev/hdd1 (windows server)
/dev/hdd2 (windows vista)
/dev/hdd3 (linux slackware)
Please don`t tell me about 3rd party software. Can I do this from Vista or 2k3-server-SP1, or should I reconfigure the LILO (Linux Loader) and boot from the Linux partition? LEGEND:
/hda is primary master
/hdd is secondary slave
/hdd1 is first partition on hdd and so on. I use the unix naming because it is short and precise. I am asking Microsoft to fix these problems for the final release of Vista. And if MS is to lazy to create a graphical interfase to formatting options and choosing drive letters, at least make sure that the diskpart.exe utility's settings and drive letter assignments) will take effect after installation. Can`t you simply offer the Disk Management console?
Vista Install Knowledge I just wanted to let folks know what my expertise was. The configuration of my PC is Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 with the nForce4 chipset
AMD 64 3500
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA GFORCE 6600
2xHaupage PVR-500MCE
RAID 0 w/2x300GB SATA Harddrive for Data Storage
80 GB SATA Harddrive for OS Initially, Never had RAID configurations before, loaded my Vista like I would load XP on a seperate partition. Bad mistake, it ruined the boot config file and my PC would not boot up. Go through the message board about RAID drivers, started again, but it would error out. Talked to my PC makers and they suggested I unplug my RAID HD and install Vista on the OS HD. Well this time it worked, everything just about installed. I had to instal Nforce drivers after the install seperately. Everything seemed to become loaded. But Vista was running really slow, about 4x slower than running XP. The final thing that finally turned me off of Vista was I could not figure out why my network card was not working. Vista installed the drivers and it said it was working. But all I got from it was a limited connection. The connection wizard did not see my router. It took me a day before I finally gave up on Vista and wiped my HD to install XP. Ofcourse XP recognized just about everything and the network was recognized right away. I was able to download any other drivers and updates. So my expertise was bad. Now I am turned off of getting Vista when it comes out, but rather wait until it has been out there before I upgrade. Luckily I did save my data on the RAIDed drives so I was ok with wiping the HD. Microsoft definitely need to make installation easier. I have no clue why they didn't have RAID support on installation. Andy
Vista Experience Index Hello, I have an Intel C2D E6600 CPU installed on an Asus P5W DH Deluxe
motherboard. I recently installed Vista Home Premium (32bit) with a hard
drive configuration of one Western Digital 10k SATA drive (for system and
application files) and two Seagate 320gig SATA2 drives. I had a spare SCSI
Fujitsu 10K 36gig drive (I connected it to a LSI SCSI adapter), so I thought
that I would configure a dual boot system with Windows XP and Vista - one OS
on each 10K drive. I did not have much success with getting the dual boot
function to work. However, I was able to install Vista on the 10K Fujitsu
SCSI drive and, provided the Fujitsu was set as the boot drive from the
motherboard's bios, I was able to boot into Vista. If I set the 10K SATA
drive as the boot device within the bios, I was also able to then boot into XP. When running Vista with this configuration, I noted that the Windows
Expertise Index was rated at 5.6. I guess if I persevered with this
configuration I would have been able to get the dual boot function to work
(I had used VistaBoot Pro). Anyway, I thought that if both drives were on
the same interface, dual booting would be easier to achieve. So I took out
the 10K SATA drive and replaced it with a 36gig (10K) IBM SCSI drive
configured off the same SCSI PCI adapter. Both drives have seperate SCSI
IDs and so are on the same channel with an active terminator at the end of the
connecting SCSI cable. I was able to install Win XP on the replacement
drive (IBM SCSI) and eventually was able to get the PC to dual boot to Vista
and XP (Vista being the default OS). Now after all that rambling, I was surprised to see that the Windows
Knowledge Index, with this configuration, drop to 4.7(being the primary
hard disk reading)! Considering that both drives are 10K drives as well as
being SCSI (which I though was the faster interface compared to IDE and
SATA), I am stumped as to why this is so. Would the installation of the PCI SCSI card itself which slows down the boot
process have anything to do with this drop in performance? Thank you, Shane

Windows Vista Aero Knowledge I am running Vista Ultimate, Version 6.0 (Build 5000) RC1 with all available updates from Microsoft installed. So far so good, but a few questions regarding Windows Aero. Is there a control panel for the Aero Flip 3D? How do I know if it's working right? My PC specs are as follows:
MOBO - MSI MS-7061 with latest BIOS
CPU - AMD Athlon 1.33GhZ
RAM - 1GB DDR
Display Adapter - Diamond Stealth S120 w/ RADEON 9550 chip 128 MB DDR and WDDN
Microsoft Tabletpc Encounter And Education Why I cannot install any of those two in my HP tx1000z CTO TabletPC running Vista Ultimate 64bit? Cheers, Gene
Any Expertise With An Asus M2R32-Mvp Board? First, excuse my English... Here is my config, a pretty big system:
-an Asus M2R32-MVP board (ATI Xpress 3200 chipset)
-Athlon X2 4200
-2 x 1G Crucial Ballistix DDR2
-3 x 250G sata Maxtor drives
-Asus X1900 video card I am installing Vista RC1, with success at first. But the disk access is very slow and seems to be slower at each reboot. At least 5 min to get the login screen, an other 5 min to be able to type the password and so on... I am suspecting a problem with the chipset drivers. My updated Acronis Trueimage software cannot recognize any hard disks. Any idea? Btw, there is data on my other disks (a lot of files). Maybe I should be more patient and wait that Vista finished its indexing job? Some of you have discussed this subject in other threads.
The Expertise Index Page Disappears Today when i open the "Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools"
There is just a dumb title says "Rate and improve .....",
the body of this page which should be the list of my Experience Index Score has totally gone.
What's happened?
How can i bring back? PLEEEEEESE HELP ME !!!!
Tablet Disappointment "User Experience" There are some good things for Tablet users and some real disappointments in Vista. It is good that the Tablet capabilities are now built in to all versions of Vista. It will make deployment of applications easier, but there seems to become a step backward as well. At least with a seperate OS version Tablet we could say about the shortcomings - "its from the next version" ie the torturous display properties workaround for making the corner close X big enough to allow the user on some Tablets be able to use it. (less than satisfactory because it eats up screen real estate needlessly) Also having to call up the TIP to do a Search etc. Not a problem for an occassional use but annoying enough to switch to or get a keyboard for extended work. Lack of built in OS ink functionality made it impossible on XP to do some work mobily. This shortcoming has not been addressed in Vista. It is obvious the handwriting is not used by the majority of the Vista developers or they would simply fix the X corner question and make all OS system text boxes ink enabled. These are 10 minute programming chores a high school kid can do now! What other things do real Tablet users wish were in Vista (or are there things to improve on XP ink use in other OS functions that I am missing ?)
Vista Service Pack 1 Encounter Hi, After installed Vista Service Pack 1 on my machine, the Windows Encounter Index that let us rate our system did not appear on the place where it should be, is that in SP1 it has been moved to other location or just simply removed? Thanks and regards,
Stephen Saw
Desktop Encounter Cannot Install Fail I cannot install the Windows Desktop Experience on Windows 2008 server trial. This is a clean install.
I tried updating windows, all updates installed successfully, except for two which gave this error: 0x80070057 ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER The parameter is incorrect. I was able to install the two remaining updates on the second attempt. Then I tried installing Windows Desktop Knowledge again, it says OK restart needed,
after the restart, before the logon screen it says Stage 3 ... counts to 100% and restarts, then it indicates checking the registry for errors and restarts again. Then before the logon screen it says: Windows updates failed, reverting changes... works for some time and restarts. After the logon, the windows components install resumes (cannot be interrupted) and reinstalls it and says OK restart needed. After the restart, the entire long process repeats forever: Stage 3 count to 100%, restart, checking the registry, restart, reverting changes, restart, windows components install resumes... I was able to install the Desktop Encounter a few months ago. But today I have no idea what's wrong, it just says it failed and cycles the long process. Any ideas?
