Quite how an election would be triggered is unclear, but there are plenty of examples of governments in India not lasting their full terms. The level of public anger over corruption has reached such a level, believe the BJP, that the public is ready for change. In parliament, Singh told Manmohan Singh that his authority reached scarcely beyond his official residence on Race Course Road.

More than that, among a number of senior political journalists of Delhi, there is much speculation and chatter that should a BJP-led coalition defeat the Congress, it could be Singh who emerges as India’s next prime minister. Their thinking goes something like this: following the success of Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal party in the recent Bihar assembly elections (which it fought in coalition with the BJP), it’s likely that BJP MPs would not number as highly as previously in any national coalition. As a result, if the BJP did not want to see Kumar himself make a bid to become PM, it would need to offer up a candidate who was acceptable to as many coalition partners as possible. Narenda Modi is too ideologically toxic, LK Advani, for all his energy, is not the future and Arun Jaitley, for all his king-making abilities, perhaps lacks for populist charisma. Sushma Swaraj, who currently holds the position of leader of the opposition in the lower house of the Indian parliament, does have support, but it’s reckoned that Singh, with his long experience of government, may be the best and most readily-agreed to option.
The veteran member of India’s main opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party, was unceremoniously ousted from the parliamentary organisation when he published a book about Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. The apparent crime of the man who had served as both foreign and finance minister, was to suggest that Jinnah alone was not responsible for the Partition of India and that established Indian heroes such as Jawaharlal Nehru also played a crucial role. The argument, in truth,Can the Power of Prayer Fix the Gulf Spill Tom Mendelsohn Independent The Foreign Desk Blogs, had been made plenty of times before, but for some reason it triggered an odd level of anger among sections of the nationalistic BJP and Singh, who has served for six terms in the parliament, was sent packing. He was hurt, angry and not a little bemused.
He said the key priority in trying to reach agreement with other parties – the main targets the BJP are trying to strike a deal with are regional parties in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and the Punjab – was a simple assessment of what issues and principles they shared. These were: dealing with soaring prices, corruption, internal and external security and the general health of the economy.
That was the late summer of 2009. Now, it appears the BJP is looking to Singh to help it try and defeat the Congress and return to government. The 73-year-old was readmitted to the BJP last June and recently has been tasked with reaching out to other opposition parties to help create a broader, pandora charms sale How to rebalance our economy, nationwide coalition and get them ready to take on the government.
Most people in India, where 70 per cent still live in rural areas, were likely not convulsed by the 2G scandal that has outraged the country’s urban middle classes, he said. But he added that the the rural poor had to deal with corruption every day at the village level and they knew the corr0sive effect it had on their lives. “I would say good governance, law and order, safety of their home and hearth. These are the things people care about,” he said.
Singh is both a Rajput – a member of the Rajasthan nobility – and a former army officer. He is charming and erudite and peppers his discourse with historical references. It’s also the case that he does not suffer from a lack of self-confidence. When I asked him about the new task had been given, reaching out to potential coalition members, he replied, a little curtly: “I think that with my experience, I am not in a position where anyone gives me a job. It was a request that I agreed to undertake for the party.”  With more obvious diplomacy he said their was no shortage of potential leaders among the BJP but declined to speculate on whom precisely might lead the party. He said one “would emerge” naturally.
India is not scheduled to have a general election for another three years. But the BJP appears to sense an unprecedented weakness about the Congress Party-led government and prime minister Manmohan Singh, which gives them hope that anything is possible.
“We, as a nation, are being severely injured. I have no sense of schadenfreude from it,Kings of Leon’s new album top of the pops or genuine rock Gareth Vipers Independent Arts Blogs,” Singh told me. “I [see a situation] with the Congress that has not been seen in the last 60 years.”
Just 18 months ago, pandora charms sale, things could barely have seemed worse for Jaswant Singh.
Jaswant Singh is currently MP for Darjeeling in the north-east of India, but he lives in a Lutyens-era bungalow in the very heart of the British-built New Delhi, an area difficult to match for its greenery, bird song and tree cover. When I went to see him a few weeks back, a peacock was perched on a broad horizontal branch in his back garden. Despite the sunshine, there was a late January chill in the air and Singh was sitting in his book-filled office, the heater switched on.
