Stopping the run was a big problem.? Although the numbers were poor from a year ago, the defensive line did produce.? Despite losing 1st team ASBC DL Bryan Hall, the good news is that there is experience returning.?
Amos Draper, Brandon Joiner, Justin Robertson, Dorvus Woods, and Jeremy Gibson, who all either started or saw lots of time, are back for 2011.? The linebacker returns 1st team ASBC LB Demario Davis who led the team in tackles (63 in 2010, 80 in 2009), Nick Nelms(28 tackles, 2010),and Nathan Herrold.? They do lose 2nd Team ASBC, Javon McKinnon.?
In the secondary, they lose 1st team Safety M.D. Jennings, but return just about everyone else including CB Darron Edwards who started every game last year and Tausean Holmes, who started at nickel and had 51 tackles.?
So the experience is there for the defense to improve under Dave Wommack and reports have it that Coach Freeze has been very excited about the way the defense has been “flying around” under the new system.? I do expect improvement from the Red Wolves on defense but still see a lack of run stopping ability that is required of a good defense.?
If the offensive line can come together and if Dave Wommack’s defense can improve against the run, the Arkansas State Red Wolves will fair fine in the SBC.?
