The writers just had our first peek inside Joe Girardi’s office at Yankee Stadium. He’s been giving his news conferences in the auxiliary clubhouse so far,
cheap Minnesota Twins Hats, but the beat writers were summoned to the office for a quick update on Jorge Posada’s stiff shoulder. (Girardi is not concerned.)
As you’d expect,
cheap Philadelphia Phillies Hats, it’s quite different from Joe Torre’s office. Torre’s office was a sight to behold, with many family photos but also shots of Torre with Don Zimmer and Mel Stottlemyre,
Milwaukee Brewers Hats, and others of Torre with Billy Crystal or Lorraine Bracco or Muhammad Ali.
It also had many baseball books, but I don’t think I ever saw a Baseball Prospectus volume like the one Girardi has in his office.
Girardi has a photo of the celebration from each of his three Yankees championship teams – 1996, 1998 and 1999 – as well as celebration shots from the last three Yankees perfect games – by Don Larsen, David Wells and David Cone. On the top of a bookshelf, he has two football helmets: the Jets and the Giants. Curiously,
cheap New York Mets Hats, Girardi’s two favorite teams, the Chicago Bears and Notre Dame,
Chicago Cubs Hats, are not represented.
There’s also a lot of empty space on the shelves of his bookcase. He should have plenty of time to fill it up.

So the manager who, in a playoff elimination game, bats the greatest player in the universe 8th, didn’t have a copy of the Baseball Prospectus? Oh, and guess what bears do in the woods?

Maybe with his baseball prospectus in hand, Girardi will figure out a way to keep Giambi from playing first base……………ever.

To say I’m disappointed that Girardi is playing Giambi at first is an understatement. I just can’t figure this. Surely there is a competent and available first baseman somewhere. Giambi’s flubs last year were responsible for too many runs. He simply doesn’t have the agility or the reach to play this position…and he can’t throw. And where is Andy Phillips? Did his injury take him out of baseball permanently?

Put Shelly Duncan at first. He can hit and he has a good glove. Don’t let his youthful exuberance waste away on the pine.

MGM — Andy Phillips signed with the Cincinnati Reds and was one of their final cuts in spring training.

I think Giambi has done pretty well- Have you even been watching? They should rotate like a catcher; every four or five days replace him with Ensberg or Duncan- Or just if there’s a mean lefty pitcher.. Works for me
