Formal fever is gripping high schools across the r
Formal fever is gripping high schools across the region with students spending hundreds - and in some cases thousands - of dollars to celebrate the end of school in style.
While many are shopping smart on a budget, others are splashing out on gowns, suits, make-up and luxury cars.
Many girls started their hunt for the perfect gown in January, with some spending up to $1000 on the dress alone.
One limousine hire service has been booked out for six months, and boys are dressing to match their partners.
The Times spoke with seven girls and found they were spending an average of $600 on the big night.
Hills in Hollywood owner Marlene Millers said the trend with girls was to make a statement.
“They don’t want plain anymore
A-Line prom dresses, they are going all out with colours such as navy, burgundy
prom dresses, teal and antique purple,” Ms Millers said.
“The style of dresses is divided

Ms Millers says young women are spending between $450 and $1000 on the dress, with shoes and accessories costing $300.
Hills in Hollywood, which started in Bald Hills

Cupids Bridal Boutique at Caboolture said it was important for young women to buy their accessories and shoes from one shop.
Sales assistant Cheryl Wallace said their jewellery ranged from $40-$70, with the shoes up to $60.
Bray Park High School student Megan Soden chose her dress from Hills in Hollywood.
``I have gone for old Hollywood style, so it’s elegant and simple,’’ she said.
Her mum Wendy Fye said many girls had spent more than $600.
``I think it’s ridiculous for one night,’’ the mother said.
Albany Creek State High School student Carmel Trevorrow is wearing a $350 strapless ballgown

Alana Roos’s mum helped pay some of the $300 for her strapless dress

Demand for luxury transport has also been high.
The eight limousines at Huhse Limousine Services, Bray Park

Many lads are following the ladies and preparing for the big night.
Sugar N Spice Strathpine manager Garth Pitman said boys rarely used to care.
``But now we are seeing boys that are a lot more particular
ball gown dresses, especially about matching with their formal partners,’’ he said. ``When it comes to choosing a suit for our young men, the jury is still out on whether it’s best to hire or buy.’’
Mr Pitman said suits were available from $199 and he believes some of the young men are looking ahead
