The opportunity to purchase the Waco Tribune-Herald almost a year ago came as I entered my twilight years, many moons after I had given up any notion of ever owning my hometown newspaper.
In my career,
Windows 7 Home Premium Sale, I’ve known success and I’ve known failure. From all that, I’ve gained what I like to think is a certain insight not just into deals and high-risk gambles but into people — how they operate, what they expect and what they’ll tolerate.
At no time in my life has all that experience come into play the way it has as owner of the Waco Tribune-Herald .
If I were to etch principles into stone, they would include these:
* We believe in investing in Main Street rather than Wall Street.
* We believe newspapers still represent the very best source of local news.
* We believe in the power of the press and that we can make a difference in our coverage and our views.
* We believe in civic responsibility and accept it accordingly.
* We believe our readers are intelligent and respect our changes, even as we strive for greater inclusiveness and relevance.
* We believe in giving back to our community.
* We believe in God and want our readers to know that “In God We Trust” is more than a motto around here.
* We believe in placing readers first.
* We believe that, in spite of the myriad problems facing our industry and our nation, we will deliver to our readers the best community newspaper in the United States. We’re dead serious about that.
The problems facing much of the overall media industry stem from riotous years of plenty, when some newspapers got fat and sassy rather than mean and lean. In the process, some increasingly lacked relevance in their own communities.
Not here. Our dream to make the Waco Tribune-Herald the most outstanding community newspaper in America must include our readers, our neighbors and those advertisers who invest in our endeavor. We see this as a dynamic partnership.
Our staff of news professionals is, as far as I’m concerned, unequaled in any community. Their dedication is absolute.
Our pledge to you remains firmly implanted in the forefront of our minds. But because we’re human, we’ll make mistakes during this long journey,
Microsoft Office Home And Business, as we plainly did on the Fourth of July when a stab at humor went awry at our cherished Founding Fathers’ expense.
No one feels this wound more than I. My lineage goes back to the extended family of George Washington. I’m proud of that.
Yet, even in that day’s edition, we offered much worthy of the Fourth. On Page One, veteran sportswriter Brice Cherry shed light on Baylor University’s commendable campaign to whip up excitement for its football season this fall, especially in the wake of the recent Big 12 scare (and,

Cindy V. Culp, one of our most versatile award-winning reporters and a Waco native, explored the thorny world of economics and the concept of buying USA.
Michael Shapiro, a talented young political reporter,
buy office Enterprise 2007, took his typically unbiased but probing look at the campaigns of U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards and challenger Bill Flores to gauge Big Oil’s influence.
Business editor Mike Copeland, another Waco native, covered everything from L-3 plans to do test flights in Gatesville to the coming of Sam’s on the Square downtown, altogether reflecting the entrepreneurial spirit that drove this nation from its very earliest days.
Our Opinion page offered a thought-provoking essay on the Civil War from a black perspective by guest columnist Don Wright. Senior editor Bill Whitaker greeted the re-opening of Washington Avenue Bridge (and just in time for the Fourth) with a column about how the bridges of Waco reflect the history of our city and nation, good and bad. And our editorial argued passionately that the Spirit of ’76 is alive and well in many of us, right here, right now, in Waco, Texas.
And we loved the full-page Hobby Lobby “In God We Trust” ad, complete with rousing quotations from the Founding Fathers.
Yes, we’ll trip now and then in our daily scramble to put together a quality paper and have it on your doorstep in time for coffee. We’re only human. But, please,
