Press Release: New Zealand Labour Party
Agriculture Minister Refuses to Acknowledge
Risks
Agriculture Minister David Carter is
refusing to confirm whether the National/ACT Government will
intervene to stop the sale of your New Zealand dairy industry
to foreign buyers.
“The purchase of a dairy farm in New
Zealand also in many instances gives the buyer the right to
shares in Fonterra.
“Just last week the National/ACT
government approved the largest ever sale of dairy farms to
foreigners with all the $28M purchase of Maniototo Farms by the
Harvard Endowment Fund.
“If the Government refuses to
intervene, as happened in this purchase there is a real risk
that a slow but steady takeover of Fonterra,

Zealand owned company, is a possible outcome.
“Grand
statements made by John Key over protection of farm
ownership are meaningless unless he is prepared to take
action and reject takeover and purchase applications for New
Zealand farms.
“The capital restructure of Fonterra
increases the risk that New Zealand will lose control of not
only its farmland but also its most successful export
company,
