Jason Bay is doing his best to help Red Sox fans forget about Manny Ramirez.
On April 24, Bay, who came to Boston from Pittsburgh as a part of the deal that sent Ramirez to Los Angeles, hit a ninth-inning, game-tying home run off Yankee closer Mariano Rivera in a game the Red Sox won in the 11th inning. That improbable victory was the first in a three-game sweep of the Yankees,
Polo Hats, and the runs were the first Rivera had given up all year. Bay followed that by hitting a three-run homer in the ninth off Cleveland closer Kerry Wood last Monday to give the Red Sox a 3-1 victory,
Detroit Tigers Hats, their 11th straight.
Late in the game when the score is close (which is defined as when the batting team is either ahead by one run, tied or has the potential tying run at least on deck), Bay has been at his best. Through Thursday, he led the majors with four home runs and eight runs batted in in those situations and was hitting a staggering .636 (7 for 11). Only Philadelphia’s Chase Utley had a higher average, .714 (5 for 7).
The Yankees should be keenly aware of the capricious nature of clutch situations. The All-Star third baseman Alex Rodriguez has posted batting averages of .275, .293,
Miu Miu Scarve, .237, .357 and .257 in his five seasons with the team. In Rodriguez’s remarkable 2007 season, he hit six home runs in 70 clutch at-bats, well below Bay’s pace.

Get back to me when Bay is hitting .636 in the clutch on October 1. Until then,
Burbery Scarves, he’s just had a good month.

Once again, the media uses small-sample sizes and ridiculous phrases like “clutch” and “heart” to distort the true reality of baseball. If Jason Bay possessed this so called “Magical Clutch” ability would he not possess this ability over his entire career? Or did he all of the sudden become “Clutch” overnight? Obviously, if you are going to argue clutch, you have to go with the former…let’s check out the stats, shall we?
in “Late and close” situations which I presume you are referring too, over his career Jason Bay hits .243 with 24 homers in 424 at bats for an .836 OPS, 60 points below his career mark.
A-Rod hits .279 with a .905 OPS with 64 homers in 1030 at bats for his career.
But hey, Jason Bay has proven he’s clutch through an entire 11 at bats this season. Gosh, he’s amazing,
Red Bull Hats!

Manchild has gone off to L.A L.A. Land, where he belongs, and good riddance I say. Bay: solid outfielder, productive hitter, team player. Manchild: terrific hitter, ghastly outfielder, passive-aggressive twit. Whenever the mood strikes him,
Cheap Snapback Hats, he’ll bail on the Dodgers the way he bailed on the Red Sox. (I calculate this is as much abuse as I can heap on Manchild without running afoul of the “Bats” censors.)

Bay is definitely a great hitter and has given Red Sox fans a pleasant surprise. Who knew that trading Manny would yield these kind of dividends. That is the good news.
The bad news for the Red Sox is that they will need Bay’s bat every in every game. In fact, they’ll need as many good bats as possible.
In 2007-2008, the Red Sox never quit against anyone. This year so far, it seems more like no one quits against the Red Sox.

I am no cheerleader for Alex Rodriguez, but seriously, you would compare him to Jason Bay? Let’s see how the season progresses before we pronounce Mr two-and-a-half months “just as good” as Rodriguez and better than Manny Ramirez. And let’s really look at his numbers at the end of the year in all ballparks not known as Fenway Little League Park.
