George Heidweiller's cityscapes are intriguing. At first glance the city in his canvases seems familiar. One can recognise the road signs of Al Barsha and Business Bay and landmarks such as Burj Al Arab; and Dubai residents would certainly identify with the traffic, the rows of skyscrapers under construction and the ubiquitous cranes. But a closer look reveals elements from other cities such as Las Vegas, Reno and Casablanca merging seamlessly with these familiar sights to create a new world that exists only in an artist's imagination but one that everyone can identify with.
Heidweiller's compositions, vibrant colours and attention to detail are impressive. His paintings are beautiful and thought-provoking. They invite you to explore new frontiers and look at familiar objects with a new perspective. The dark, hazy,
polo ralph lauren, blurred buildings under a colourful sky, the carefully chosen signboards of well-recognised brands, the bustle of traffic in contrast to the tranquility of the sea and swaying palms and the integration of different places make strong statements about modern urban life. That dynamic urban growth and globalisation often result in a loss of cultural identity making cities around the world look alike.
"My paintings show you places that do not exist. I make them up while painting. But each canvas does give the viewer the impression of being or wanting to be in that particular place at that particular moment. My paintings are like movie stills or the first lines of a romantic novel luring the viewers in or giving them an angle to start dreaming from," Heidweiller said,

Silkscreen dreams
The Amsterdam-based artist graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague in 1981. At 23, his first show at the Millers ############## in The Hague was sold out within a week. Heidweiller did several commissions for the Dutch government before moving to Amsterdam where he began experimenting with the collage technique that he uses today. He is also the founder of LOOS,
franklin marshall, the biggest art club in Amsterdam.
Heidweiller's work has been deeply influenced by his travels around the world, especially India and Australia. In Australia,

He has also trained under Holland's famous artist Herman Brood and has done commissions for well-known brand names such as Tommy Hilfiger. He uses silkscreens in his work and owns a studio which also makes silkscreens for many other renowned Dutch artists. His present series of cityscapes uses silkscreen and acrylic painting to create a unique effect.
"Silkscreen gives me the possibility to combine various elements and juxtapose parts of different images. It also allows me to work fast and keep moving from one painting to another. I use acrylic paint with a silkscreen medium in order to work directly with acrylics without the paint clogging my screens. The medium makes the paint dry slowly, thus I can combine the vibrant colours of acrylics with the silkscreen effect. And the process is also eco-friendly because I can clean the screens with water rather than chemical thinners,

He has successfully experimented with lamp designs and fashion accessories and has painted couches for a public art project. He customised a Fender guitar with the Tommy Hilfiger logo for the fashion company. But Heidweiller's main focus is his cityscapes.
The series displayed at his exhibition here has been specially created for the occasion. He visited the city in August last year to get impressions and took hundreds of photographs of beaches, flyovers,

mercurial vapor, while painting he does not work from photographs or sketches. "I begin with no preconceived notions, letting the memories and impressions buried in my subconscious guide my hand. There are so many angles and positions racing through my mind. Sometimes I am in the city, sometimes I look at it from the outskirts and at other times I am far away. "The integration of different cities in my urban landscapes is not deliberate. It happens subconsciously, perhaps because the cities are similar in that they inspire me with creative ideas regarding art, design and architecture and challenge me to realise those dreams on canvas," he added.
Despite the vibrant colours, Heidweiller's cities have a dark, brooding feel. "Yes, there is melancholy in my cityscapes. I love the wearing down of certain areas of cities such as industrial sites with exposed electrical wiring. But what makes me sad are those boring, endless suburban environments with rows of similar houses.
"My next series will be dedicated to slums. I want to show the way slum dwellers build houses on top of each other using corrugated iron. I am intrigued by the modern and the rough. Think Gotham city, Sin City and the way the new world was shown in Blade Runner by Ridley Scott — a combination of the East and the West; dark and gloomy but also very beautiful and intriguing," he said.
The artist is impressed with the art scene in Dubai and happy to exhibit here. "Dubai has so many creative possibilities. I love the way the city is being designed — the great architecture and the untamed planning," he said.
"Dubai wants to become a major player in the international art world and can certainly make that happen. The art scene is evolving in the right direction and I believe that Western artists can play a role in it by exposing art lovers here to new and edgy art. The ################## here are professional and involved and I am thankful for the opportunity to show my work here."
George Heidweiller's cityscapes will be on display at B21 Progressive Art ##############, Al Quoz, till May 15. The ############## is open from 11am to 7pm on weekdays.
