The Styles Of Adult Tutus
The tutu is a classic design associated with all the elegance of the ballet. There are a number of styles that you may not be aware of. But before we begin looking at the different styles of tutu, we must first look at all the separate parts of the design.
Bodice
The bodice is made of a number of panels of fabric, anywhere from six to fifteen. The bodice is very similar in design to the corset but is far less restrictive to the dancer. Some of the panels of fabric are cut diagonally
bra lingeries, which gives the material some stretch.
Basque
The basque is the piece that sits from the waist and goes to the high hip. It can be sewn in with the bodice or be a separate tight fitting band of fabric.
Skirt
This is the part that most people associate with the tutu. The skirt gives the shape to the tutu and defines its style.
Styles
The romantic tutu
This was the first tutu worn in Paris in 1832. The skirt was cut above the ankle to reveal the intricate legwork. The romantic tutu is long and flowing and made of three to five layers of fine, soft material.
The classical tutu
After the romantic, came the classical tutu. This shorter version came about from the audiences demand to see more of the inspiring movements the dancers were beginning to perform. Today, there are two different classical styles: the flat Russian style and the softer Balanchine style.
The Russian style has a flat
corset dressus, wide skirt that is tightly hooped and tacked. The hooping is stiff wire that is inserted into one of the central ruffles. This gives the skirt its stiff shape.
The Balanchine style has no wire and is made of softer material similar to that used in the romantic style.
Bell tutu
The bell tutu gets its name from its shape. It combines elements of both the romantic and classical styles. As with the classical style it has ruffles that are stitched directly onto the panty. It has fewer layers than the classic style but more than the romantic. This style also has no hooping and is very loosely tacked. The bell tutu is the style that can be seen being worn for fashion by the public.
Although the tutu is a simple design, its impact on culture cannot be underestimated. It is the symbol for ballet and will forever be associated with dance. The shaping, color and design possibilities are limitless and for every dancer they are a must have piece
